The Genesee Valley Safety Conference announces:

Congratulations to our ASSE/GVSC Scholarship Winners:
RIT Students

  • Lyndsay Beaudin: "Lockout/Tagout at F.X. Matt Brewery"
It was the unexpected energization of a case palletizer that nearly killed a maintenance worker at F.X. Brewery last summer. Due to a lack of lockout/tag out procedures and training, one of their most valuable employees was seriously injured. Thankfully, management showed their leadership and commitment to safety immediately and addressed their system errors by initiating training, fully enforcing safety and updating their outdated procedures. What once was a decrepit safety program has now become a fully integrated safety system that will help keep their employees healthy and whole everyday.

  • Tim Chen: "Confined Space Accident in China"

  • Brittany Dombrowski: "Grain Mill Safety"
I will briefly discuss the dangers in the industry and what the employers must do under OSHA to ensure worker safety. I will use the incidents at Tempel Grain Elevators LLP in Colorado and Haasbach in Illinois to illustrate the importance of following the OSHA standards for worker safety.

  • Derek Hitesman: "Confined Space Kills 4"

  • Gavin Schoepp: "Fork Truck Safety at Dayton T. Brown"
My presentation is about an incident that I was involved in during a Co-Op at Dayton T. Brown an Environmental Testing Facility. I will give an overview of the situation then explain my suggestions on what they should have done as a solution.

These students presented their papers at the ASSE meeting on May 2, 2011. Congratulations to all our scholarship winners!

The History of the Genesee Valley Safety Conference:

On September 28, 1954, Health & Safety professionals from the Industrial Management Council of Rochester, the Genesee Valley Chapter of the ASSE and the Rochester Safety Council attended a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce building. Their purpose was to create an independent, educational, nonprofit, non political organization dedicated to promoting safety and health through conservation of life by preventing accidents and occupational diseases.

They envisioned this objective could be accomplished through conferences and expositions that would enable health and safety professionals throughout Monroe County and the Genesee Valley to exchange technical information, share expertise, network and increase their own knowledge.

Unto that end, this organization was called the Genesee Valley Safety Conference and Exposition complete with specific by-laws and goals to provide health and safety conferences and expositions every three years. Their first conference was held in May, 1956.

During the 50 years that the GVSC conference and exposition has been in operation, we have seen safety, health and environmental philosophy and technology thrust into prominence.

These impact each of us, our jobs, and our community.
